Elderly-Friendly Renovation: Making Homes Safe for Aging Parents
Practical modifications to make your home safer and more accessible for senior family members
Renovating for Elderly Family Members As Singapore's population ages, more families are modifying their homes to accommodate elderly parents. Planning these features during renovation is far cheaper than retrofitting later. Bathroom Safety (Most Critical Area) Install grab bars near the toilet and in the shower area. Use stainless steel bars rated for at least 150kg load. Wall backing must be reinforced during renovation to support the bars. Use anti-slip floor tiles rated R11 or higher. Avoid polished or glazed tiles that become slippery when wet. Consider a walk-in shower instead of a bathtub. Remove any step or threshold at the shower entrance to allow wheelchair or walker access if needed in future. A shower seat (either fixed to the wall or freestanding) allows elderly family members to sit while bathing. Raised toilet seats or wall-hung toilets at a height of 450-500mm (instead of standard 380-400mm) make sitting down and standing up easier. Flooring Throughout the Home Choose non-slip flooring throughout. Vinyl flooring has better grip than polished tiles. Avoid rugs and mats that can cause tripping. Eliminate all floor level changes where possible. If steps are unavoidable, add contrasting color strips at the edge of each step for visibility. Doorways and Corridors Widen doorways to at least 900mm if possible. Standard HDB doorways are 800mm which is tight for wheelchairs and walkers. Replace door thresholds with flush transitions between rooms. Use lever-style door handles instead of round knobs which are difficult for arthritic hands. Lighting Bright, even lighting throughout the home reduces fall risk. Motion-sensor night lights in corridors and bathrooms help elderly family members navigate safely at night. Avoid harsh direct lighting that creates strong shadows and glare. Cove lighting and diffused ceiling lights are better options. Kitchen Modifications Lower some kitchen counters to 750mm height for wheelchair access or seating while cooking. Install pull-out shelves in base cabinets so items are accessible without bending down. Use D-shaped handles on cabinets which are easier to grip than small knobs. Ensure the kitchen has adequate lighting on the counter surface for safe food preparation. HDB Enhancement for Active Seniors (EASE) Programme HDB offers the EASE programme that subsidizes elderly-friendly fittings. Eligible items include grab bars, slip-resistant treatment for floor tiles, and ramps. Singapore Citizen households can receive up to 95% subsidy depending on household income. Check the HDB website for current eligibility criteria.
